Minimal os is designed to help you focus, lower your screen-times and avoid trivial activities. Besides your own mental benefits this also serves environmental purposes.
Minimal os is a concept prototype for an OS that should counter the overwhelming information overflow and App targeting usually happening in IOS and Android. Those systems or specially the Apps within become services not for you, but rather for company's to sell things to you. Therefor they are highly trying to get you to use them as much as possible. Minimal os counters this movement. The overall look and feel is designed to be a minimalistic and undistracting as possible. Minimal os is designed to claim your attention as shortly as possible. It wants you to use your phone as a tool and put it immediately aside as you stop needing it. This philosophy applies to the OS and Apps similarly.
The home screen (seen above or on the left) was the contribution of me and another student to this project. The home screen is designed to guide you as quickly as possible to its most important features. It is divided into three components, the top row with information such as date, time and temperature. Directly below are the most important settings, which are not "hidden" on another page compared to traditional operating systems. Finally, most of the Viewport is the display of apps, which are divided into ones with messages, prioritized ones and all the others.
We developed Personas to portray users we want to acquire with minimal os and developed an exemplary customer journeys we want the average user to have compared to a normal OS such as IOS or Android. The mental Model behind the home screen is Pretty simple as the whole app should feel like a clean hallway the user uses to switch and navigate between the rooms (Apps). Besides that we developed an overall style guide applying to the whole os and all apps within it, to keep it as consistent and uninterruptive as possible.
The briefing before the development of the OS was a minimalist energy-saving design using only black and some light grey shades. The goal was to use fewer illuminated pixels than a general operating system. Minimal os was a group project of 14 students in the winter semester 2020/21. We got together in groups of two and each group designed an app for the general operating system. My part was the creation of the homescreen, which I did with a partner.
This video was created for the Dessau Design Show in 2021, it shows all the apps that were developed and briefly pitches the project. The Video shows the results of all 14 Students that were working on different apps for minimal os. My participation to this was cutting the videos together and animating the transitions between the different apps.
